Shraddha’s Valai

It is indeed ironical for someone like me, who was so far quite oblivious of the fact that the Tamil Drama’s even exists, to accept the fascination that has grown towards it. My respect for the various Drama troupe’s has increased over the past few months. The amount of dedication that is put in and the perfection that these talented artists achieve is just unbelievable. Take the script, direction, acting, the stage set up or even the background score, everything is worked upon with sheer sincerity. The very fact that these people still continue acting and creating wonderful stage dramas, despite the lack of glitz and glamour associated with it, just shows the amount of love and passion towards it.

Sraddha’s Valai, written and directed by Srivatsan, is a brilliant and unconventional script that talks about the web (Valai in Tamil) that we unknowingly spin across our lives. The opening scene enacted by the protagonist Balaji as Shiva, her wife Maya and his father (played by Kathadi Ramamurthy) goes for more than 10 minutes and Kathadi Ramamurthy with his witty comical punches steals the show with ease. The very next scene showcases the amazing creativity by the people managing the sets, a set over another. I mean the whole hall literally broke into applause when the curtain was raised, something that I have never witnessed so far during any other play. The concept of showcasing two different timelines is not new but the approach that was taken for Valai was simply mind-blowing.

The entry of Nithya Kaushik, who plays the character of Mrinalini, was definitely impressive. I mean, it’s not often that you see such a charming and cute girl playing a villain character. The eloquence with which she carried her role was pretty much evident through out the play. Did i mention that she was pretty? Ahem! Mani who plays the part of a staff working with Balaji was impressive too. Although the manner in which his character was portrayed was far from reality, it did add a lot of fun factor which kept the audience entertained.

Balaji soon discovers the evil plot and conspiracy around him that could very well jeopardize the whole project. This marks the entry of Srivatsan who, as always, got a grand reception from the audience. He played the role of the well known writer Sujatha. The whole conversation between him and Balaji was something beyond what was required at that point of time and perhaps, was just added to increase the weightage to Sujatha’s character. From thirukurals to nanotechnology, it had everything, which at the beginning made the scene a little draggy. Nevertheless, Srivatsan’s impressive stage presence did make up for that part of the script.

The script ended on a good note and it was left to the audience to comprehend what the real Valai was. Was it the web of corporate life that we spin around ourselves and we don’t even bother coming out of it? or Is it the technology that inevitably spins its web around us without which we cannot live and also at the same time which could do us a lot more harm than we can possibly thing of.

It is indeed quite sad to know that most people still consider the whole thing related to this Tamil Drama and Theatre as obsolete concept. The only solace is that various troupe’s and organizations such as Shraddha are putting all they can to revive the theater culture. Going by the recent unique scripts like Shyamalam and Naarkaliku Edamilai, and the reception that it has got, Tamil Theatre does look strong.

Enthiran (ROBOT) – Movie Review

No Spoilers !!

I cant think of  any movie that was being as eagerly awaited as this one and why not, just look at the names of the People Behind the Movie – Rajnikanth , Director Shankar, Aishwarya Rai , A. R. Rahman , Yuen Woo Ping as the stunt coordinator , Stan Winston Studios (special effects) and not to mention the Production house  SUN Pictures which backed the whole project with a whopping Indian Rupee symbol.svg160 Crores (and for the worldwide publicity) . And when names like these come together its natural to have an expectation beyond imagination.

Its not everyday, that your friend calls you  for a movie like Enthiran saying that he has got tickets for  weekend night show, at possibly , the best theater in the city. You dont get luckier than this 🙂 . And It is even more unlikely that during a time like this when you are high on mood waiting for the spectacle to began you realize that you are sitting on the Very First Row of the theater  😛 . You just feel like standing on the seat and to Cry out loud.. “MAAPU !!! Vichitaaan da Aaapu” 😛 . I guess this was only thing i regretted for the next 3 hours.

The movie sure ,unlike the other movies in the past, has lived upto its expectations (i mean my expectations 😛 )  . Before seeing the movie i had got a little “not so” promising remarks about the first half of the movie but i believe it could not have got any better.  All Credits to Director Shankar for believing in his script and waiting for almost  a decade for making this Historical movie Which might well be the opening for Sci- Fi Movies in the indian Cinema.  The Sheer flamboyance of Shankar’s direction can be seen in movie everywhere right from the Scene one. The locations for the songs couldn’t have been better  especially the ” kathal Anukkal “ which has been shot GOD KNOWS WHERE (please enlighten me ). I have never seen Special effects of such Quality in indian cinema ( Mind you, i am a big hollywood fan so i wont compare it to hollywood standards  ) although i feel , had the movie been under Hollywood Productions , the special effects could have been even better with even more budget 😀 . Stunt sequences were awesome ,the train one in particular ( leave alone the ROBO rajni running on the train 🙂 ) and I am really tired of actually saying that the music is good 🙂 . When A.R . Rahman is the Music Director, it has more or less become a default compliment associated with him 🙂 .

Rajnikanth politely declared in Enthiran why he is still acting at 60 . Although the movie is not exactly the Stereotype movies he normally selects , he has carried the whole movie and taken it to a different level altogether .  Sometimes it is really irritating to  find people mocking rajni and his so called exaggerated stunt scenes .  Yes,  he might have done something overboard but everyone in the industry too have done that at one point or the other, so why pick this man out. Better than mocking i think all those people should consider watching his old movies :X . Anyways lets come back  to the review, Rajni obviously stole the show through his ROBO character ” CHITTI ” . Honestly , there was nothing much in the movie when we talk about the performances. Almost 80 percent of the scenes has Ranji in it . I just felt as if there were just 3 characters in the whole movie (two of them being Rajni 😀 ).  Unbelievable but true.  There aren’t many Indian movies where you would actually be enjoying a villain’s character and i can assure  you that this one is one such kind .

Songs although wonderfully shot, sometimes appear to have been introduced just for the visual treat, like the “kilimanjaro” which seem to have no proper reason of being there.  Some action sequences in the climax too appear baseless but in indian cinema you are bound to watch those even though u dont like it 🙂  and yeah the funniest of all where Rajni talks to a mosquito ,it is actually not something that i expected from shankar’s movie 😛 .

Inspite of those things that i mentioned above i wouild still rate the  movie 7 out of 10. Please do watch the movie just to witness -the flamboyance shankar has given to the indian cinema,   life that Rajni gave to the ROBO character called Chitti ,  Music that was equally complimented by the superb locations they were shot and may be, on a lighter note , even for the kisses Aishwarya Gives to Rajni (almost double her age) 🙂 .

My Friendly advice for those  who love to watch a movie just to find logic behind the scenes is just avoid the movie rather than lamenting later 🙂 and yeah, once again for all those Who dont like Rajni, you should start watching his earlier movies first 🙂 .

And I being a Rajnikant Fan would be surely watching it once again ( atleast ) 🙂

PS: Did I say that one of scenes in the movie was shot at My office (Olympia Tech Park, Guindy 🙂 )

Jai Ho !!!

No surprises  .I am not going to write anything new , infact i have got nothing new :P.

First of  all I would like to congratulate Ar Rahman and Resul Pookutty for bringing oscars 😛 to our country ,something that we badly missed every year. Each and every indian would be proud for what they have managed to achieve . Frankly speaking i never thought we would get oscars 🙄 .

But ,when A.R.Rehman got nominated i was sure that he would get one atleast . He is a true genius . Starting from Roja for which he won national award ,he has never turned back . The magic he creates in every movie  still amazes me. I can name quite a few movies which ran in theaters just  due to his music 😛 .Kollywood -> Bollywood ->Hollywood , Is there anything left unconquered .

Long live rahman  . Jai Ho Rahman !!

Anyways, I would like to put forward some questions . Give me your honest opinion 😛

Both the songs in slumdog were good . But dont you think he (rahman) has infact , given us far better songs in the past ??

No wonder slumdog won the award for best cinematography , I really liked the way the movie was presented ,but did it deserve the award for best motion picture ???

Did You know who Resul pookutty was before he won the oscars ?? (i mean i am not a movie buff so i wasnt aware of him )

okay i will stop it here .You see, time constraint is a big problem . 102 posts still unread on my reader .  My valuable comment will be on all ur blogs within a day 😉 .Extremly sorry for the delay 😦

Chao  !!!

This is my personal choice .

Navarathri Golu

Its festive time everywhere in india with a difference that people call it with different names and celebrate differently . WIth the start of navaratri people are busy here preparing for Golu/kolu . Heck !! i dont know how it should be written ..tamil script is confusing 😦 . Anyways There are not many Tamil readers of this blog so i thought it would be a good idea to write a post about something that people follow here religiously .

Now don’t fall into conclusions that i am religious just because i am writing the post ,Infact i am the worst in my family when i comes to religious activities. Last two days i have been helping my cousin in his preparation for golu . So wrting the post about it seemed the most obvious for me .With my mom and my sister away from home I dont have any source of info now to go deep into this but i would share everything i know 😉 .

Golu is a custom that is practiced here in tamil nadu  during the navarathri days  to worship goddess shakti/devi as mark of victory of good over evil.Three – three days are allotted each for goddess durga goddess lakshmi and goddess saraswati . Relatives and friends are invited to the house usually ladies and girls . As far as i know , the festival is purely for girls 😛 .

The First part in setting up of a golu is to form a  base structure that is steps  called as Padi ,which is usually kept in odd numbers. My grandparents used to have wooden steps those days but nowadays people have gone way ahead . There are ready made Iron steps available which after use can be dismantled and used like a shelf  . Arranging it is a tough job though .. IT took me and my cousin about 3 hours to arrange the iron rods .

Once the steps are ready , each of them  is decorated with small idols or dolls of gods or goddess . The first step usually has a chettiyar doll like the one u can see at the right side. Other steps are decorated with various colorful dolls of various gods or anything that appears good ..

Shopkeepers keep their shops stuffed with dolls  well before the festival starts and the Creativity of the doll makers has added more beauty  . A group of women praying in front of tulasi plant , a ramayana set ,  DASAVATHARAM are some examples of innovations that doll makers have brought into this festival .  Dasavatharam set  being the latest craze  consists of 10 dols each portraying one of the 10 avatars of lord vishnu .Infact its the latest craze and my cousin bought a set too 😉 .

The creativity doesn’t end with just doll makers . Once their steps are decorated with thes colorful and lively dolls  people try something creative too  like setting up a  miniature park , zoo  ,a cricket match or anything else one could think of .

Once the Golu is set , people form the locality ,relatives are invited to the house . Mostly its the girls and ladies ( like i said before women’s festival) . On a lighter not guys are usually waiting  for this festival so that they could see some good looking girls  however i have been always unlucky on this part  😦  .

Sundal
Sundal

Girls sing kirthanais (bhajans !!! hope i am right) to please the gods. At the end they are given some gift and sundal to eat. Sundal is a dish made up of items like groundnuts ,peas etc. For each day a unique type of sundal is made which makes 9 different recipeis for the whole navaratri . Sundal is basically popular with the little ones. Although i had no interest in golus during my childhood i used to visit each home with my mom just to bring back sundal. The amount of sundal i collected those days was enough for me to survive on for a week . 😛

The festival’s end is marked by changing the position of a special doll (whose name i forgot) The doll is laid down horizontally which symbolically puts them to sleep . Then all the dolls are removed one by one and put into a trunk or whatever can hold them all . Next year same thing is followed with the additions of new innovative dolls.

Oh …btw here’s the golu at my cousin’s house ..
